Where to report a scam call or text in the UK
If money or bank details are involved, contact your bank first. Then choose the reporting route for where you live and what happened.
1. Contact your bank if you paid or shared details
Contact your bank or card provider immediately through its app or your card’s number. Ask what can be done about the payment.
Hang up before calling 159 to reach a participating bank safely. Stop Scams UK lists the participating banks and networks; call charges depend on your phone provider. Use the bank’s own trusted contact route if 159 is not available to you.
2. Report fraud through the correct police route
- England, Wales and Northern Ireland: Action Fraud’s website now redirects to Report Fraud. Report through that official service or call 0300 123 2040. Its FAQ confirms the areas it covers.
- Scotland: report to Police Scotland on 101.
- Immediate danger: call 999, as Ofcom’s guidance directs.
3. Forward suspicious SMS texts to 7726
Forward the suspicious SMS to 7726, free of charge. You can also report a suspicious mobile call by sending its number to 7726. App messages such as WhatsApp usually need the app’s own reporting tools. Follow Ofcom’s instructions for your message type.
Keep the details together
Make a note of when the call arrived, the displayed number, what the caller claimed and any payment reference. Keep messages and screenshots safely. Report Fraud says to preserve evidence yourself; it cannot retain evidence for you.
For nuisance sales calls, use the ICO’s reporting guidance. For an investment or pension approach, check the FCA’s ScamSmart link, now its current scam guidance, and report concerns to the FCA.
